Dog painting from your photo works like this: upload one picture of your dog, choose Oil Painting, Watercolor or a classic Royal portrait, and the AI repaints your dog with visible brushwork while keeping its face, coat and markings. The first preview is free and appears in about 30 seconds.
From phone photo to dog painting in three steps
- 1
Choose the photo
Good painting starts with good light. Pick a photo where light falls from one side, so the painter has shadows to work with.
- 2
Choose the medium
Oil Painting gives thick strokes and a dark background. Watercolor gives soft washes on white. Royal or Renaissance add a costume on top of an oil look.

What you get in a dog painting here
Real painted texture
The Oil Painting style builds fur from visible strokes, with warm highlights on the nose and eyes, the way a studio painter would.
Watercolor that breathes
Loose edges, soft color bleeding into white paper, and detail kept where it matters most: eyes and nose.
It is your dog
Wall art shops sell paintings of someone else's dog. This paints yours, with its own markings, from your photo.
Minutes, not weeks
A commissioned dog painting takes weeks to arrive. Here the first result is ready in about 30 seconds.
Try both mediums
Run the same photo as oil and as watercolor and pick the one that fits your room. Each run uses credits as usual.
Ready for canvas
The HD file prints sharply to about 8 × 8 inches. Take it to any canvas or photo print shop.
A dog painting of your dog, not a stock print
Search for dog paintings and you will mostly find art prints for sale: a beagle by a fireplace, a row of colorful abstract pugs. They are nice, but the dog is a stranger. The point of this page is the opposite. You bring the photo, and the painting is of the dog asleep on your couch right now.
That changes what matters. With a stock print you choose by color scheme. With your own dog you judge by likeness first, then by style. So the AI is told to keep the face, coat color and markings from your photo and only change the paint, the light and the background.
Dog oil painting vs watercolor: which suits your dog
A dog oil painting is rich and dark, with a warm light on the face and fur built from short strokes. It suits dogs with strong coats and strong faces: a black Lab, a brindle boxer, a red setter. It also suits darker rooms and wood frames.
Watercolor is airy. White paper shows through, edges fade out, and the dog seems to float. It works beautifully for light coats, fluffy puppies and bright rooms. The watercolor pet portraits page has more on that style. If you want the formal museum look with no costume, our pet portrait painting page covers classic oil in depth.
Medieval and renaissance dog painting looks
Medieval dog painting searches are often about that popular meme look: a dog in armor, a stiff noble pose, a gold background. The Knight costume does exactly that, with polished plate armor and an old-master finish. General adds medals and a Napoleonic coat, and Admiral puts ships behind your dog.
All costumed styles live on the renaissance pet portraits page, which lists all eight costumes and has its own examples.
How much does a painting of my dog cost?
A hand-painted dog portrait painting from an artist usually starts around $100 and takes weeks, more for large canvases or two dogs. Shops that sell designer-made digital portraits charge roughly $15 to $40 per file, and $60 to $170 for a printed canvas.
Here the first painting is free: preview without an account, then the HD file after a free sign-up. After that one dog is 40 credits. Packs start at $5.99 for 250 credits and the biggest pack works out to about $0.83 per painting. Details on pricing.
Painting your dog yourself? Use it as a reference
Some people come here because they want to paint a dog by hand. A good reference makes that much easier. Generate an oil version of your photo first: the AI has already simplified the background, picked a light direction and grouped the fur into big shapes. Then copy it on canvas. If you would rather paint a cat, the cat painting page has the same idea for cats.
- Start with the big shapes of the head and the dark areas. Leave details for later.
- Paint the eyes and nose early. If they look right, the rest forgives a lot.
- Paint fur in the direction it grows, in a few strokes, not one hair at a time.
- Keep the background simple. A single dark or warm tone, like the AI version, keeps focus on the dog.
Where a dog painting looks best
Over the fireplace
A dark oil painting of your dog in a gold frame gives a room an old country house feel.
A canvas gift
Print the HD file on canvas for a birthday or the anniversary of the day your friend adopted their dog.
Nursery or kids room
A soft watercolor of the family dog fits next to baby photos.
Reference for an artist
Show a painter the AI version as a starting point for a hand-painted commission.
